Extending the Backbone
Core Network
By TBY | Mozambique | May 27, 2014
Now, upgrade plans are focused on building additional redundancies into the network, improving last-mile connections to homes and businesses, and building additional trans-border connections. While the existing backbone runs in two lines, one undersea and one along the coast, upgrade plans now focus on building a third backbone line in the South that will cover hinterland areas of the country. The design is focused on creating “rings,” so that, as Zainadin Dalsuco, CEO of TDM explained to TBY, “a single cut is not going to stop service.” This will add an additional 2,300 kilometers to the backbone network.
The upgrade is also working to improve last-mile connections with fiber-to-the-home (FTTH). TDM aims to provide homes and businesses in 12 major cities with direct fiber-optic broadband access. As Dalsuco explained to TBY, “the resurgence of coal and gas […] has led to economic growth and demand increases for telecommunication services, particularly data.” A decade ago, he says “when we decided to implement this upgrade, many people questioned why.” Now it is evident that Mozambique’s telecommunications infrastructure will play an important role in supporting economic growth in the years to come.
