The New Baku

Development of Baku

Pride in one's city can come from a variety of factors. It can relate to the people, the weather, the history, the attractions, or the venues.

Pride in one’s city can come from a variety of factors. It can relate to the people, the weather, the history, the attractions, or the venues. In the case of Baku, one of the most important elements of its nature is its continuing growth and development. Like Dubai, a city where there are always new plans, innovations, and exciting prospects, Baku is a city that is constantly changing. Structures such as Park Bulvar, Flame Towers, and the Heydar Aliyev Centre are now famous in Baku. Even in the most fleeting of stopovers, visitors are likely to witness these creations. However, if one were to wind the clock back 10 years, these icons of the city did not exist. It leaves much to the imagination as to what we will see in a decade’s time.

Baku is not only changing, but also expanding. The “city center” no longer refers only to areas such as the Old City, Fountain Square, and the Boulevard. SOCAR Tower, the new sports stadia, and the new terminal of Heydar Aliyev International Airport highlight that Baku is still growing. Situated on Heydar Aliyev Prospect, SOCAR Tower is a looming structure that is unmatched in stature or modernism in the surrounding area. Located comparatively far from the traditional center of the city, SOCAR’s office-to-be is a prime example of Baku’s geographical expansion. Heydar Aliyev Airport’s new terminal, opened in April 2014, is an example of the continuing modernization of the city’s architecture. The practical benefits of the new terminal aside, the state-of-the-art facility is remarkable in its composition, originality, and beauty.

Most importantly, perhaps, are the stadia that have been developed for the purpose of hosting the European Games. These have not merely been created to facilitate the coming event. The city has created landmarks in Baku and symbols of a city experiencing transformation. The architects responsible for Baku Olympic Stadium and Heerim (also responsible for SOCAR Tower) have been involved in iconic projects across the world, including the Busan Lotte Town Tower that is under construction in South Korea and the Keangnam Hanoi Landmark Tower in Vietnam, which is the tallest building in Vietnam. With a reputation to experiment and amaze, the presence of Heerim is an example of the efforts that have been made to modernize the city.

The Baku White City Project is another example of swift developments in Baku, and is one of most eagerly anticipated. Built out of “Black City,” the location of the now terminated oil refineries, Baku White City epitomizes the city’s expanding and improving landscape. ALready it forms an important part of the extension and rehabilitation of the city.

The extent of development in Baku is perhaps not clear to the first-time visitor. Flame Towers and the Heydar Aliyev Center are certainly impressive; yet it is hard to imagine the city without them. Baku White City is a long-term, ongoing project, and will continue to change the city in an area that, in the past, would have been deemed unusable. Modern and original architecture is beginning to change the very nature of the city in the shape of SOCAR Tower and Baku Olympic Stadium. Considering that so much construction and remodeling has happened in recent years, looking ahead, one can only imagine how much the city will have transformed in another five years.
