Captain Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba is the Acting CEO of the Maritime Cluster at AD Ports Group responsible for overseeing the development, management, and operation of marine services, shipping, operations, and related assets, including a large fleet of ships and marine units. Al Shaiba joined AD Ports Group in 2013 and has held various positions, including Director of the Maritime Department of Zayed Port and Khalifa Port, CEO of the Ports Operating Company, and General Manager of Zayed Port, Free Port, and Mussafah Port. He holds a professional master’s degree in business administration and an advanced diploma in marine sciences, among other credentials, and is a member of various prestigious committees in the maritime sector.
In 2022 the Maritime Cluster delivered an outstanding performance, almost tripling its revenues and accelerating its role as a fully integrated facilitator of global trade and a steward of Abu Dhabi maritime assets. It was also a year that saw the cluster rapidly become a more comprehensive provider of services and products, with a synergistic portfolio of assets with different market cycles to limit business performance volatility. Driven by new acquisitions, joint ventures, market entries, and the expansion of its service offering, the Maritime Cluster’s revenue increased by 253% to reach AED2,141 million, up from AED607 million in 2021. This rapid acceleration contributed significantly to AD Ports Group’s total revenue, accounting for 36%.
SAFEEN Group has grown at pace with acquisitions and partnerships helping to accelerate our growth, and as we grow, we firmly believe that a digital focus is key. Through digital transformation we are streamlining the business and optimizing it. Establishing a more efficient way of working creates greater transparency within the supply chain and leads to a saving in time and costs for our customers. Additionally, accelerating the transition toward sustainable operations positively impacts the environment. Also, we are committed to exploring and implementing strategies for reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including alternative fuel use. We are exploring hybrid vessels to use dual fuel, hydrogen, or methanol fuel systems for tugs and the conversion of existing tugs to greener fuels. Following the approval of biofuels by the International Maritime Organisation, SAFEEN Group has been using biofuel within some of its operations.Since May 2022, our container feeder vessel SAFEEN Pearl has been successfully using B20 biodiesel fuel to power its on-board Aggreko generator. This has reduced the vessel’s carbon footprint by 20%. We have also had success in trialing B20M Very low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) for use on our container vessel SAFEEN Pride, which has so far demonstrated a similar reduction in carbon emissions. To date, we have had a very positive result from the implementation of biofuels, due to the reduction in emissions. This year we have invested in an upgrade to our Vessel Traffic Management Information System (VTMIS) within our port operations to maximize safety, security, and efficiency. Attaining the highest quality and safety in line with international standards is paramount for us. As the largest and most advanced provider of advanced integrated maritime services in the region, it is exactly these benefits that SAFEEN Group offers clients.
As part of AD Ports Group, we are constantly growing our international business interests and expanding the portfolio of services we are able to offer customers around the world whilst boosting trade and economic relations with other nations. This development gives us a better understanding of global markets and is building a network of ports, trade corridors, and logistics hubs in key strategic locations, which increases collaboration, flexibility, and cost effectiveness—vital elements of an integrated supply chain. For example, our recent joint venture with KasMorTransFlot (KMTF), which is the first of its kind between a UAE company and the Kazakh National Oil Company, a significant player within the global energy sector, has opened the door to enormous opportunities in the Caspian Sea. Providing maritime services in this key market only demonstrates how far we have grown and how capable we now are of providing advanced offshore services on a global scale.
