Claudio Cortes Soria is CEO of Grupo Radical, Spain and Americas, Claudio Cortes who, together with his team, has positioned Grupo Radical as a benchmark in terms of cyber security, an objective achieved thanks to the various actions they have undertaken. In addition to having a highly trained professional team that is constantly updated, it has made significant investments in terms of infrastructure. He did his studies in Network and Telecommunications Engineer at the Escuela Politécnica Nacional, Business Strategies, Specialized Sales, Merchandising and Marketing Operations. He has a Technology degree from the Monterrey / ITESM Higher Business School. Master in Digital Law at the University of the Americas (UDLA).

TBY talks to Claudio Cortes Soria, Owner & CEO of Grupo Radical, about cybersecurity, services on offer, and client satisfaction.
How has the mindset of companies evolved over the past few years in regard to cybersecurity?

We could divide this into three components: the markets, the suppliers, and the users. The cybersecurity market has been growing exponentially, cybercrime has become a priority and people are more aware of it. The pandemic has made people more technological and now more IoT devices are being used, there are more online conferences, and there is more news and information on cybercrimes and cyber fraud. There is still a large gap in this area so we still need to raise awareness of this problem. Technology has allowed us to develop stronger processes, procedures, and solutions. The area where we work is endless, there is no beginning or end, and the possibilities are constantly growing. Organizations are also becoming more aware of this and seeking ISO certifications to ensure you have the ability to protect them and their privacy. Some people think cyber security is not for them because their information is not under attack, but with everything that has been happening, especially in Ecuadorian industry, both public and private, they’ve become more aware. Now, they do think cyber security is important because if they suffer an attack, it will have a negative effect on their business, work, reputation, income, and everything else. People understand cyber security is not a fad, but a necessity for the continuation of the business. Therefore companies today are thinking about business plans, contingency plans, and cyber security plans. Usually, when there’s an attack, attackers have been in a company for six to eight months analyzing the most opportune moment. These attacks happen at all levels. In 2009, Nuclear Power, Iran, suffered its first cyberattack, which discontinued its activity. On a national level, there is critical information in every aspect of society. Cybersecurity is relevant for all markets, industries, and governments.

What main services do you offer and how can companies benefit from them?

We work in three technologies. The oldest is called IT and it’s used to protect database servers. Then, we have OT technology that manages critical infrastructure. This is the machine’s language that you use to program it so it can extract oil and send water, for example. Then, there’s another type of technology: the IoT. Now, people can attack through a TV, a watch, or anything. Basically, the target is whoever stands to lose more. Companies are aware of this, and calculate how long it will take them to recover from an attack by quantifying the risk and what they would face without cyber security. That’s how they tell you, okay, I have a budget for this, or that amount, because they already know how much they would lose.

What are your competitive advantages that lead to 95% of client satisfaction?

If you look at our logo, there is a shield with three points because we are aware that technology on its own is useless, we also need processes and procedures. And that’s why we hold six ISO certifications, quality certification, help desk, and anti-corruption, which can be correlated with ODS. We need the social responsibility factor as well. The other aspect is people, I could have processes in operation, but if I don’t work with people, help them, and provide for them, I won’t succeed. The formula is to have a strong approach to people, and develop their abilities. Our service is the same in the US, Mexico, Panamá, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Bolivia, Chile and Spain and we employ the best technology to face such types of attack, which is why we have developed a security operations center, and we also have a center for emergency response and another for incident response. At a global level, we are members of Delfi, an intelligence network that provides support and prevents any type of attack on our clients. We care about clients, and prefer to prevent attacks rather than solve them.

How would you describe the process of expansion to other countries within and beyond Latin America, and how are your products perceived?

The expansion was part of our plans. From 2001 to 2009, we presented an important manufacturing company. Beyond 2009, we started selling to our own clients, and having been a part of the manufacturer TresCom widened the scope, whereby we had friends in India, Shanghai, Argentina, and Brazil and undertook expansion accordingly. We first expanded to the Spanish-speaking region, and by 2025 we want to be an Ibero-American company, which is why we opened a Gupo Radical office in Spain. Our goal for 2025 is to have at least one client in all of America, even Brazil, and the US, with at least one client in each country. From 2025 to 2030, we intend to expand globally. The expansion was possible thanks to the love and education provided by the TreCom corporation.

How do you collaborate with the public sector?

Technology doesn’t have a political flag, but is a matter of social responsibility. If we didn’t help and support a country, we wouldn’t be honoring our values. For us, the government should be the most transparent entity there could be. In a company, you have the free will of whether you perform or not, but a public company is obliged to comply and make its processes transparent, support the citizens and provide tools, trust, and infrastructure for the betterment of its citizens. We have a strong responsibility to all of the countries we are present in. We believe the state needs to update, train and support citizens, but that if the private sector is not willing to help, it won’t be possible.
