David Muntaner Juaneda

Professional Cyclist, Spain

Bio

David Muntaner Juaneda is a Spanish track cyclist. At the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics, he competed in the men’s team pursuit for the national team. Muntaner turned professional for the 2014 road season with the ActiveJet team.

In line with Mallorca’s goal to evolve into a year-round destination for sports tourism, David Muntaner Juaneda has played a key role in popularizing cycling on the island.

What makes Mallorca attractive for the practice sports such as cycling, and how can the island better integrate this sport in its tourism strategy?

The weather of the island is an important factor for cycling. The climate is excellent for riding bikes, and most of the people who come to Mallorca are from the north of Europe, which do not have good weather in autumn and spring. In addition to the weather, another important factor is the different terrain within a few kilometers. One can reach most of the mountains of Mallorca from any hotel. The different terrain in such a short distance is unique. Additionally, cycling can play an important role in contributing to the evolution of tourism in the island. In terms of spending, those who travel to cycle spend more than standard tourists. They stop in different towns during the day, buy things, and have lunch and dinner in different villages, which are usually far away from touristy areas. On top of that, many rent a bike or a vehicle while they are on the island, creating more opportunities for locals. The season for cycling runs from February through June. Then, it falls during summer and picks up again in September and October, which helps the island receive tourists during non-peak season.

How is Mallorca evolving to present itself as a cycling destination, and what role can cycling events play?

Mallorca has been doing extremely well thanks to its infrastructure and the complementary services offered on the island such as rental services. There are hotels that are open during the season for cyclists and have adapted their offer to this type of clients. The island’s government and the private sector are working together to create the best conditions to transform the tourism sector. Things are changing, and the sector is constantly coming up with new ideas. As for international events, Mallorca has the Challenge Ciclista, which takes place in February. It is an excellent starting point for the island to be better known in the world of cycling. Many cyclists come here and see our routes.

Your store Cycling Planet has become the go to destination in Mallorca for cycle fans. How did you achieve this level of acknowledgment?

Cycling is a sport that has become popular over the last few years, and our store has served to cater to the needs of people that want to keep practicing this sport or get started. We have managed to achieve a great presence via social media, and word-of-mouth has been crucial for us to become such a well-known destination for cyclists on the island. For cyclists, it is normal to stop at places and have a coffee. When we opened this concept of store and bar exclusive for cyclists, it was unique. We are pleased to have achieved such a level of recognition and contributing to make cycling in Mallorca better known.
