Antonio Mayer

President, British Chamber of Commerce in Mexico

THE FORUM

This is the forum where British and Mexican businessmen can meet and interact with each other. As part of our core activities we organize an average of 30 events per year, featuring the most important leaders of the different economic sectors of the Mexican business scene as well as important government and political, national, and UK figures.

THE MEMBERSHIP

We have 320 members. We focus our activities through 10 Business Sector Groups that represent a large percentage of the UK business community in Mexico as well as Mexican companies with business interests in the UK.

BENEFITS TO INVESTMENT

There exist a lot of benefits for British investors here in Mexico, as well as for other international investors. Procedures to establish a new business in Mexico are constantly being simplified.

Francisco J. Garzón Morales

Director, ICEX

THE SME GAME

ICEX has a wide range of activities in Mexico. We’re always looking out for new opportunities and new sectors. Our main focus is on SMEs; 70% of our work is in promoting trade flows and investment for smaller businesses.

SPANISH PRESENCE

Spanish companies are horizontally present in almost all sectors. The biggest presence is in the service sector and utilities. The financial, energy, tourism, infrastructure, and industrial sectors all feature major Spanish companies. In industry, there are Spanish companies in both the automotive and aeronautical sectors.

FDI

Spain is the second highest provider of FDI in Mexico, accounting for over 15% of total FDI, or around $40 billion over the past decade. The US is obviously the biggest source of FDI, at over 50%.

OLD & WISE

The Mexican Chamber of Commerce is the oldest commercial institution in the country, and one of the oldest worldwide. Actually, it was founded in 1874 and we have strong experience in business practices thanks to our long history.

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

The chamber is principally specialized in three sectors of the economy: commerce, services, and tourism. The commercial sector is the most extensive one, especially in the consumer goods domain. The service sector is mostly composed of legal and accountancy advisories. In the tourism sector we principally represent hotels, tourist services in general, and schools and universities related to the tourism field.

AREAS FOR INVESTMENT

There are large opportunities in many sectors here in Mexico. I think that energy is the most promising one, as well as the automotive sector or the electrical appliances industry.

José Zozaya

President, American Chamber of Commerce

MAIN INITIATIVE

We provide services to all members of our chamber. We regularly meet with the Mexican and US governments to address important issues. I am proud to say that we are part of the solutions, which are in the best interests of the members of our chamber.

PROMISING FUTURE

The automobile industry is growing fast, as is the retail industry. Services are also growing. There’s a lot of opportunity in Mexico now, not just for the US. I have to clarify that although we are an American chamber of commerce, we have companies from other countries on our books.

THE BEST YEAR

The fact is that Mexico is a country that is growing and working. There are a lot of opportunities. In 2011, AmCham had the best year ever—and we really believe that we are doing good business. That’s proof that investing in Mexico is really worth it. The numbers are good, and it’s attractive for foreign investment.
