"People here take meticulous care of their appearance, displaying a genuine eagerness for beauty services."
TBY talks to Nora Mousa, CEO of Nora Mousa Clinic, about cosmetics in Saudi Arabia, patient demographics, and goals for 2024.
How would you assess the evolution of the field within the Kingdom, and what makes the Saudi market unique from other regional countries?

People here take meticulous care of their appearance, displaying a genuine eagerness for beauty services. The demand for beauty services in Saudi Arabia is exceptionally high. To meet this demand, we continuously strive to provide more advanced and superior services, investing in top-quality devices and acquiring the latest equipment available worldwide. Saudi Arabia serves as a destination for the most innovative beauty devices, often being the first to research and introduce them. Moreover, the government plays a pivotal role in overseeing the beauty industry, ensuring stringent regulations and controls. They meticulously evaluate the work of practitioners and the quality of devices, maintaining high standards across the industry. Additionally, there are legal ethics rules in place, ensuring that doctors practice within their specified specialties and adhere to evidence-based medicine principles. Governmental oversight is extensive, encompassing infection control measures within clinics. This focus on safety extends to regular inspections of clinic operations, minimizing hazards for patients and fostering a safe environment. Importantly, patients have avenues to voice concerns and file complaints, leading to investigations and potential legal action if necessary.

And especially in aesthetics, what would you highlight from the market in Saudi Arabia?

What I particularly appreciate about working in aesthetics here in Saudi Arabia is the significant demand for these services. The emphasis on beauty and aesthetics creates a conducive environment for practitioners to gain extensive experience and expertise. With a high demand for aesthetic procedures, I have the opportunity to practice more frequently, allowing me to refine my skills and provide better outcomes for my patients. In contrast, in some countries where there is less interest in aesthetics, practitioners may have limited opportunities to perform procedures, hindering their ability to develop proficiency in this field.

Why do see great demand in aesthetics here?

The demand for aesthetics in Saudi Arabia is notably high due to several factors. Firstly, there is a strong culture of self-care and personal well-being among women in the country. Many women prioritize their health and fitness, regularly attending gyms and seeking out health-related services. Additionally, with recent changes allowing women to drive, there has been a noticeable increase in their participation in public life, further emphasizing the importance of personal appearance and grooming.

How would you describe your patient demographic? What distinctive trends or preferences have you noticed among individuals seeking these treatments?

I have been practicing in Riyadh for seven years, and my patient demographic is quite diverse, drawing individuals from various regions across Saudi Arabia. What I have noticed about my patients is their strong inclination towards research and information. Prior to their appointments, many of them extensively research not only about me as a doctor but also about the clinic and the specific services they are interested in. They arrive well-informed, having already explored options such as filler lifts or cheek fillers and seeking guidance on the best approach for their unique features. As a doctor, my role is to understand each patient’s individual characteristics and guide them toward treatments that will enhance their natural beauty. For example, for patients with prominent noses or receding chins, we may discuss options such as filler injections to achieve a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

What are the trends that you see in your clients and the preferences that they request to you?

Currently, there is a trend toward procedures such as thread lifts, which can provide a lifted and youthful appearance; however, it is essential to note that not every trend is suitable for every patient. What is most important is addressing each patient’s specific needs and concerns. Additionally, I always consider the overall facial features and address any existing concerns or imperfections before proceeding with cosmetic procedures. This personalized approach ensures that each patient achieves optimal results and avoids any unnecessary risks or complications. I have been fortunate to establish strong relationships with my patients, many of whom return regularly for maintenance treatments or to address new concerns. Practitioners play a crucial role in guiding patients towards realistic and flattering outcomes. They must possess both medical expertise and artistic sensibility, akin to a skilled artist. This involves understanding facial anatomy and knowing how to enhance natural features to achieve a harmonious and balanced appearance. However, it is also essential for practitioners to be cautious and ethical in their approach. Patients may request enhancements that are not suitable for their facial structure, and it is the responsibility of the doctor to advise against such changes. Aesthetic procedures carry risks, and inappropriate interventions can lead to dissatisfaction or even harm. In this dynamic field, practitioners must navigate the fine line between meeting patients’ desires and ensuring their safety and well-being.

Could you share some insights into the latest advancements or techniques in aesthetics and filler treatments that you find particularly promising?

Advancements in aesthetics and filler treatments have revolutionized the field, offering patients safer and more natural-looking outcomes. Non-surgical facelifts using fillers and threads have become a popular choice, completed in under 30 minutes and providing visible improvements in skin laxity. Skincare procedures also incorporate collagen-stimulating devices and injections to enhance skin health and youthfulness. These innovations not only transform physical appearance but also contribute to patients’ psychological well-being, boosting confidence and self-esteem. Addressing cosmetic concerns can profoundly impact individuals’ lives, fostering a positive self-perception and improving social interactions.

How do you prioritize patient safety and satisfaction while also addressing common myths or misconceptions about aesthetic treatments?

In Saudi Arabia, there is a positive perception due to effective promotion and access to quality services and devices. This fosters trust in the safety and efficacy of treatments. Government regulation ensures control and oversight, further bolstering confidence. Additionally, promoting the psychological benefits of aesthetic treatments, such as increased self-confidence and improved social interactions, helps dispel myths and encourages acceptance.

Looking ahead, what do you envision for the future of aesthetics in Saudi Arabia, and how do you see your role evolving within this dynamic landscape?

The future of aesthetics in Saudi Arabia appears promising, characterized by continued growth and innovation. I envision the integration of cutting-edge technologies and treatments, such as exosomes, which represent a new frontier in skin rejuvenation and therapeutic interventions. These advancements hold the potential to yield remarkable results and address a wide range of skin concerns effectively. As a practitioner in this dynamic landscape, I foresee my role evolving to encompass the adoption and mastery of emerging techniques and technologies. This includes staying abreast of the latest developments in the field, undergoing continuous education, and refining my skills to deliver optimal outcomes for patients.

Could you share your thoughts about your activity in social media, and what’s your goal behind the scenes?

My activity in social media serves as a platform to share valuable insights and information with the public. Through articles, videos, and other content, I aim to educate individuals on various aspects of health, wellness, and aesthetic care. Over the years, I’ve focused on topics ranging from skincare tips to disease prevention strategies. Through my efforts in social media, I’ve observed a growing trust and appreciation from patients and followers. Their positive feedback and expressions of gratitude serve as validation that my content is making a difference in their lives.

What are your key priorities and goals set in your yearly agenda 2024?

In 2024, my focus is on continual learning and professional growth. I aim to establish myself as a trusted doctor by sharing valuable insights and expertise with my community. My goal is to be a helpful resource for anyone seeking guidance in my field, whether through social media, articles, or community events. Ultimately, I strive to contribute positively to the well-being of others and fulfil my responsibility as a healthcare professional.
