Raed Haddadin has more than 25 years’ experience in management covering all aspects with a passion for sales and marketing. He has held several leading positions with mobile operators across Middle East and Africa. He has been CEO of Majan Telecom in Oman since 2013. Before, he was the commercial director for Zain East Africa, chief sales and customer care officer for Zain Sudan, and marketing director for Zain Jordan, where he had started in 2000. He holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering and joined a Harvard Business School executive program.

TBY talks to Raed Haddadin, CEO of Majan Telecommunication LLC.

Can you tell us more about the breakdown Majan Telecommunication and the evolution of its subsidiaries in the market?

Under Majan Telecom, we have Renna Mobile and Red Bull Mobile. Majan started in 2009 with the Renna Mobile brand, after which we added Red Bull Mobile in 2019. Our first years with Renna were challenging. In 2013, there was a major change in shareholders as well as focus. At that time, we also shifted our focus toward the expat population living in Oman. We grew from 40,000 customers to more than 500,000 customers between 2013 and 2017. Due to that growth, Renna Mobile was recognized as the most successful MVNO at the MVNO World Congress which took place in France in 2017. From that, Red Bull Mobile came into the picture, which targets a different segment: the youth of all nationalities. Now, we have two brands targeting different segments, and Renna and Red Bull support each other.

How would you define the Omani telecom sector, and what trends do you observe today?

We have the highest share of the market among mobile resellers, and Renna has held this position since 2016. After that initial growth burst between 2013 and 2016, it was difficult for us to grow more. This is because we reached our target segment, and entering new segments was challenging. Subsequently, we introduced Red Bull Mobile. Red Bull is wholly unique in the market by focusing on outdoor activities and sports events; we want to build more than a brand. We try to bring customers to some of the many Red Bull events happening all over the world. Unfortunately, the pandemic prevented some of those. However now, as things are reopening, we have an interesting road map ahead with many events, some of which include bringing international athletes to Oman. Even though our core service is telecoms, we try to differentiate ourselves by providing experiences that money cannot buy. We want to deliver a unique and exclusive experience to our clients. We also have free music streaming for our clients from Apple Music, Spotify and Anghami. We also introduced rollover data to all of plans, services that are not being offered by anyone else.
