Country Manager, Tek Experts Nigeria
Nigeria is one of our best locations. We are doing business here because we are tapping into the tremendous opportunities here in IT talent and its potential. The company saw the untapped opportunities the country could provide and, so far, our 18 months here have been successful. The people aspect of companies is crucial. We are addressing the IT sector as a whole and providing young graduates with much-needed employment. We are comprehensively building up areas of expertise that are crucial to any company, worldwide. Our biggest success and assets are definitely our people. Our biggest challenge is perhaps providing opportunities in terms of placements for all the people who apply for a job with us. The opportunity is the tremendous pool of human assets coming into the company. The challenges are not really from an individual company perspective. They are more about the wider ecosystem and how we, from a government, private enterprise, and educational perspective, can bring all these forces together to ensure we grow together. Society will change radically when it starts this digital transformation. Some 60-70% of the world economy will be digitalized by 2022. If Nigeria is not able to elevate skills and make its people part of this journey, this change will actually increase the economic divide in the country.

One of the things that we are doing in terms of data analytics is helping companies implement enterprise resource planning systems (ERP) such as SAP and Microsoft Dynamics. An ERP system is software that houses all the operations of a company, from finance, customer relations, human resources, operations, marketing, sales, project management, logistics, and manufacturing. The idea for e-Space came about because we always look from our clients’ perspective: what do they want and what do they need technology wise? We do not sell them a product or a service; we provide a solution that helps our clients make more money and makes them more efficient and productive. One of our target markets is construction. In the beginning, we were subcontractors installing IT infrastructure in existing and newly constructed buildings. Now, we are the infrastructure service provider in the building, known as infrastructure as a service (IaaS). That gives the building owner the high-tech infrastructure of a fiber-optic network in every room, allowing for ultra-high-speed internet, private networks, and television. The in-building fiber optic networks not only serves tenants but allow for monitoring and control for the building, like temperature sensors, access control, security cameras, fire detection, and prevention.

We offer bespoke software applications and have come up with different applications for different verticals. Tenece has identified certain sectors of the economy that have not been sufficiently served by technology and where it would be easy for us to intervene with a business model that creates a win-win scenario for both the clients and us. About two years ago, we identified healthcare services as an area in which we can use technology to bring about significant improvement and create value for all the stakeholders. We developed our own indigenous hospital management system. Some of these hospitals do not have the funds to deploy those services. Therefore, we worked out a business model where we implement the software for them, deploy the hardware infrastructure, and then charge them just a token each time that system is used to provide a service. We have done the same thing in schools. Tertiary institutions are in a sector where technology can be used to transform the entire learning and teaching experience. We are not stopping at the software level. At the school level, we are rolling out broadband internet, creating wireless hotspots within the campus environment to provide unlimited access to the internet. Our model is to identify those underserved sectors and provide a win-win model that allows them to enjoy the capabilities of technology without breaking the bank.
