Walid Omar

COUNTRY MANAGER, MOVE ONE QATAR

Bio

Walid Omar has carved out a professional career in Doha since 2000. His tenure spans influential roles with global giants like Aramex, DHL, and Move One Inc. He blends experience, leadership, and managerial finesse that have led to success in dynamic, multinational environments.

Move One has evolved over the years from the core business of relocation services to offering diverse services including destination services, culture training, and freight forwarding.

How would you describe the evolution of Move One since it commenced operations?

Move One was established in Qatar in 2012. Our operation provides a diversity of services and products such as household goods moving, locally and internationally. We support expats from door to door when it comes to moving their household goods, from packing to unpacking to assembling, customs clearance, and shipping. Aside from that, we have unique services others lack, which are destination services such as school search, home search, and orientation tour. All these services for those who come and are new to Doha help them find the right house and the right school for their kids. Our last product is the freight forwarding and customs clearance business. We ship worldwide as well as handle customs clearance in both air-port and port. In 2012, we initially started out with moving services because this is our core business; however, once we realized that people who come to Doha need someone to help them find a house, a school for their kids, and so on, we started providing culture training, a unique service that only Move One and one other company provide. Incidentally, we are proudly the only company in Qatar to recycle our packing materials.

What challenges did Move One experience in Qatar, and how did it overcome them?

The challenge started in 2017 when the blockade occurred, lasting until 2021. In addition, the pandemic was a major trial for companies in our market. That was a challenge for us because we needed to send a surveyor to check customers’ furniture. During that time, we relied heavily on technology such as video surveys, which has made our operations more convenient, and we continue to invest heavily in technology. 2022 was a good year for us, though the third challenge came in 2023 in the wake of the World Cup. All projects came to an end, and there was no funding from the Public Works Authority of The City of Doha (Ashghal) or the government. Fortunately for us, we have a globally established name in the market. We have corporate clients who continued using our services, despite the blockade and COVID-19. We are always there to provide cus-tomer solutions and can rely on the support we need from our headquarters in Dubai.

What is your outlook for Move One in Qatar?

2023 was a tough year for us; however, we are hearing about the oil and gas and military projects that are happening in Doha. I feel that the future is bright for the logistics sector as demand is high. At the moment, we are increasing the number of salespeople to maximize our coverage of the market, notably businesses around us in the West Bay area, the recognized business hub. Our vision for the future is to invest in salespeople and generate income later. Move One has a wide regional presence. How do you collaborate with the company’s offices in other countries to enable larger business deals for corporate clients? That is our key winning business. The sheer range of countries we cover is our sales key and added value. Move One is one company, one system, one invoice, one payment, and with no hidden prices. And being one system and one company is convenient for our staff as well as for the customers. At present, we are expanding notably in Africa, where our newest branch is in Senegal. We are in 18 countries in the Africa region.

Do you have any expansion plans for your warehousing business?

Yes, we are. We are one of the companies in Doha that provides customers with long-term storage possibilities. The warehousing solution is important for us. Currently, our warehouses are full, and we are planning to expand the space, as we also offer short-term storage. It is all added value and added business for us.
