Yousef Alhorr, Founding Chairman, Gulf Organization for Research & Development (GORD), talks to TBY about spearheading Qatar’s sustainable transformation ahead of the Vision 2030 deadline through initiatives such as the Global Sustainability Assessment System and research efforts in eco-materials and renewable energy.

How does GORD lead Qatar’s sustainable transformation ahead of the Vision 2030 deadline?

GORD is committed to spearheading Qatar’s sustainable transformation in alignment with Qatar National Vision 2030. Our primary strategy involves the implementation of various initiatives across our centers of excellence and affiliates. Through the development and implementation of the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) by GSAS Trust, we ensure that the design, construction, and operation of buildings and infrastructure adhere to stringent sustainability standards. In 2022-2023 alone, the number of green buildings certified under GSAS surpassed 600. This not only promotes resource efficiency but also catalyzes innovation and awareness within the construction sector. GORD Institute plays a pivotal role by conducting multidisciplinary research in areas such as eco-materials, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. These research efforts yield novel technologies and solutions that contribute to Qatar’s transition to a low-carbon economy. Through GORD Academy, we not only foster knowledge but also build the nation’s capacity to implement green solutions, thus empowering Qatar to effectively pursue its sustainable transformation ahead of the Vision 2030 deadline. The academy imparts essential knowledge and skills in green building, climate action, and decarbonization. To date, it has trained over 5,000 professionals and hosted over 150 workshops. On a corporate level, we have GORD Advisory that works with organizations to formulate tailored strategies needed to optimize their operations for environmental excellence. Ultimately, everything GORD does serves a dual purpose, catalyzing climate action for the planet while also contributing to the prosperity of Qatar and the realization of its national vision.

How does GORD collaborate with international partners and organizations to exchange knowledge and promote best practices in sustainable development?

GORD actively engages with international partners, research institutions, and organizations to exchange knowledge, expertise, and best practices. Our participation in international conferences, workshops, and forums enables us to share insights from our research and initiatives while learning from global leaders in sustainability. In 2022-2023, for example, we formalized our collaboration with leading organizations operating globally and locally. On a global level, GORD’s collaboration with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has given rise to the creation, maintenance, and hosting of the Green Events Tool. This integrated web-based tool targets decarbonization and sustainable development by focusing on environmental impacts of conferences, meetings, exhibitions, trade fairs and sporting events, and more. As a result of our collaboration with the internationally recognized Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), GORD now leads the official AEE Qatar Chapter that fosters capacity building in areas related to energy efficiency and conservation, renewables, sustainability and energy management, and more. Locally, we are working with Qatar Mobility Innovations Center (QMIC) to collaborate on the development and delivery of IoT-enabled smart solutions targeting the energy and environment markets.

What initiatives has GORD undertaken to educate the public and raise awareness about sustainable development in Qatar and beyond?

GORD Academy is at the forefront of our efforts to educate and raise awareness about sustainable development. We organize regular workshops, training programs and educational initiatives aimed at professionals, students and the general public. These initiatives cover a wide range of topics, including green building skills, climate actions and energy assessment. Furthermore, GORD Academy collaborates with educational institutions to integrate sustainability into curricula, ensuring that the next generation of professionals is well-equipped to drive sustainable practices forward. At the same time, we hosted students and faculty members from Kuwait University on an educational tour to Qatar. Through such initiatives, GORD fosters a culture of sustainability and equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to Qatar’s sustainable future.
